Feb. 14 marked the seventh annual celebration of V-day, a campaign to end violence against women.
V-day stands for victory, valentine and vagina.
V-day sprang out of Eve Ensler's award-winning play, "The Vagina Monologues," to be presented March 6 at Northampton Community College. The play spurred a worldwide movement to spread awareness and raise money to end violence against women and girls.
"The Vagina Monologues" is the result of Ensler's worldwide research, reflecting the experiences, hardships and words of those she interviewed in such places as Pakistan, Kosovo, Mexico, Jerusalem and the United States.
Ensler interviewed more than 200 women and girls about how rape, incest, battery and sexual slavery affected their lives.
The theme for the 2004 campaign focuses on the celebration of Vagina Warriors - women who have experienced, witnessed or have actively joined in the fight against violence.
V-day was named one of Worth magazine's "100 Best Charities" in 2001. In its first five years, V-day organizers raised more than $14 million for national and international organizations, and programs combating violence against women and girls. In 2003, more than 1,000 V-day benefits around the world raised $4
million.
The NCC production will be directed by Theatre major Sam Beedle. The producers are NCC counselor Ziona Brotleit and Melissa Sherbert, an assistant professor of Communications/Theatre.
The primary sponsor for the NCC production is the Women's Club or Northampton.
This is the first year NCC has participated in V-day.
Brotleit was thrilled that more than a dozen NCC students auditioned Jan. 29 for the play, she says.
"I am hopeful that NCC will continue to be an active participant in V-day every year after this
production.," Brotleit says.
"The Vagina Monologues" will be presented at 7 p.m. Saturday, March 6, in Lipkin Theatre on NCC's Bethlehem Campus. Admission is $10, or $7 with a student ID.
