After a three-year wait, Bethlehem's own, Said Sadly, has followed up its debut 2000 release, The Past Is Tragedy, with its new seven-track EP, Alone Within(Dissonant Records).

During the past few years, Said Sadly has been making a name for itself, and has been gaining plenty of local support and a healthy fanbase.

Said Sadly is currently touring the New York City area, with a few shows in Pennsylvania as well.

Eric Shirk, the group's bass player, says the band has come a long way since The Past Is Tragedy.

The indie-rock band starts the new EP out strong with its first track, "Clear And Cold."

Mim DiBiase, Said Sadly's lead vocalist displays her talents as a strong, toneful singer in this song that's seemingly about a love who's becoming distant to her.

The rest of the band backs her with a tasteful bite, some gritty guitar, and an overall song that is hooks-a-plenty.

Shirk holds "Good Night" together with a nice, thick bass tone, which drives the majority of the song.

On "Futile Plains," Shirk's bass sounds like he is using a pick to get the brighter tones that cut through on the track. "I don't like using a pick, he says. "I just play really hard."

On a later track, "Reverend," The band tones the music a down a bit, or so it seems, with this more mellow tune.

The band soon shows impressive build in its dynamics, and at almost exactly two minutes in, the song kicks into overdrive. "Reverend" ends with the conviction that it built up to.

The title track, "Alone Within," displays both electric and acoustic guitar parts done by Joe DiBiase, that complement the continuity and mood of the lyrics, "I'm alone within myself and it's dark in here," with crying chords.

Dave Gibson, the group's drummer holds every song on Alone Within(Dissonant Records) together with competent drumming, and unorthodox fills that take the listener by suprise.

Since the recording of Alone Within(Dissonant Records), Said Sadly added Hakiim Jones, its new guitar player, to the band.

Said Sadly is a tightly-meshed band that can be expected to produce more good material like Alone Within(Dissonant Records) in the future.

Students 21 and older can check out Said Sadly at The Sterling Hotel on May 12, at 9 p.m.

Younger students can see the band at Easton High School on June 18 at 11 p.m. Said Sadly's Web site is SaidSadly.com.
