The Lady Spartans softball team eclipsed one of the longest winning streaks in college sports April 1.

By defeating the Montgomery College-Rockville (MD) Lady Knights 10-0, The Lady Spartans broke the 92-game record of North Carolina's women's soccer team set in 1989-93. That was the team led by Olympic gold medalist Mia Hamm.

The streak also goes beyond that of the 1971-74 UCLA men's basketball team coached by John Wooden and led by Bill Walton.

"It's such a big relief to have this over with," said Sam Carrodo, who has coached NCC to a record of 220-34 since he began in 1997.

To the team, it was just another day at the park.

"After the first pitch it was like any other time," said Jenna Turner, who went 3 for 4 scored two runs in the game.

NCC jumped out early, scoring six runs in the first inning highlighted by home runs from Katie Bee and Amanda McGimpsey.

After leading off the second inning with a double, Turner stole third base and scored on Katie Bee's fielder's choice giving NCC a 7-0 lead.

In the fourth inning, the team added three more runs, two on Katie Sculley's double, making it a 10-0 game.

"I'm so mad," Sculley joked after the game. Her double appeared to be heading out of the park, but dropped a foot short of the left-field fence.

In the fifth inning, after Turner mowed down the Knights in order, the game was stopped because of the 10-run mercy rule.

The last time NCC lost a game was April 24, 2004 to Lehigh Carbon Community College. LCCC was originally scheduled to be the opponent NCC broke the record against, but it failed to field a team this year.

NCC scheduled the record-breaking game against Lincoln University, but Lincoln was not ready so the game was delayed a week. That was the second time Lincoln delayed the game with NCC this season.

When Carrodo needed a replacement team to play, he recalled Montgomery College-Rockville's coach Jen Edwards had shown interest in a match. Edwards' assistant coach, Diana Martlock, played for Carrodo in 2002 and they had requested a game with NCC earlier in this year. The schedule was full at the time, but delays and cancellations changed that.
