Yankees/Torre will at least play one more

With the Major League Baseball season's spectacular ending, there could only be little doubt the first round of the playoffs would not be.

Instead the first round was little to brag about, with the Rockies, Diamondbacks, and Redsox all sweeping their first round series.

Although there was some upside to this historic season as more history was written, by this being the first time since the Division Series started in 1995 that 3 teams had a sweep of their opponents.

The major headlines now are coming out of New York. With the Yankees on the verge of elimination Sunday night, "The Boss" George Steinbrenner made a statement about Yankee manager Joe Torre. "I think we're paying him a lot of money. He's the highest-paid manager in baseball, so I don't think we'd take him back if we don't win this series." Steinbrenner said.

These are the strongest words against Torre all season as the relatively loud mouthed "Boss" has kept quiet.

Joe Torre has weathered what some say as his best season in New York after starting the season 21-29 and still making it to the playoffs. Continuing his streak of 12 straight playoff appearances, not to mention his 4 World Series Championships with the Yankees dating back to 1996.

So the Yankees responded as only they knew how, win. They took the field Sunday night with their backs against the wall, down 2-0 in a best of 5 series against the Cleveland Indians. The upside was supposed to be having Future Hall-Of-Famer Roger Clemens on the mound.

The first inning was shaky to say the least, with Derek Jeter committing a very un-likely error. And to make things worse Clemens was pulled from the game after only 2 1/3 innings from an ailing hamstring, and New York down 3-0.

What could New York do at this time but turn to the youngsters to get them out of the jam. So on came Phillip Hughes who some say is the next Roger Clemens.

Hughes pitched 3 2/3 innings of solid baseball striking out 4 and only surrendering 2 hits.
