Awareness key to security

A recent Commuter poll of 50 NCC students revealed that 34 were not aware of emergency telephones located around campus for their use.
"I think we have a safe campus," said Willard Craig, a campus security guard said. "I think what makes us unsafe is students not knowing what we offer."
The Commuter poll showed that even those students who were aware of the phones were unsure of their whereabouts.
The college installed red phones around campus for student use in case of an emergency. These enable students to reach a security guard directly to report a problem. The phones have green flashing lights so security can easily locate the student in trouble.
These phones are positioned toward the back of parking lot A, between lots B and C, and lot D, as well as in all buildings on campus.
Heightened campus security concerns, prompted by school shootings at Virginia Tech and elsewhere, led the college to implement the NCC Alerts emergency text and e-mail notification system last fall. The entire school is notified via e-mail or cell phone in the event of an incident and its location. People can then be directed to safety.
Anyone with questions or problems setting up their NCC Alerts account should call 800-936-3525.
Craig said he wants students to be assured that campus security officers are not the enemy.
He makes himself readily available and if help is needed, he encourages students to just ask, he said.
Escort services are provided to those who feel unsafe walking to their vehicles after class. Find an emergency phone and call, Craig said.
"As staff members and students, we need to be concerned with everyone's safety not just our own," Craig said.
The phone number for campus security is 610-861-5588.
