Alix Olson ignited students into laughter for Len Roberts Poetry Day April 7.

Olson, a poet born in Bethlehem, performed her work to a packed Lipkin Theater.

Fueled by topics ranging from homophobia to George W. Bush, Olson performed her spoken word with high energy and a smile.

She flawlessly held her audience's attention. Opening each poem with jokes, she filled the room with laughter and applause. Her performance was roughly an hour long, finishing with calls for more and an impromptu song sung with two students.

Olson said she is driven to perform because of the social injustice of any form.

Though her topics and language may not suit all audiences, Olson said she's never had an audience that didn't enjoy themselves.

According to her personal Web site bio, Olson performs at festivals and colleges around the world, touring nearly 200 days a year. She has been featured as the headlining performance for HBO's "Def Poetry Jam" and won the National Poetry Slam in 1998 and the OutWrite LGBT Slam in 1999.
