"A pleasure to coach" is how NCC tennis coach Jack Master describes the team he's preparing to lead into its first game ever in the NJACC.
"This team has great work ethics, a desire to improve, great personalities and seems to enjoy the opportunity to play tennis for NCC," Master said.
The team will play it season-opener on April 24 against Delaware County Community College.
It's a young team, with only two returning players from last year, Megan Groh and Cody Ruff and defending state champion Megan Groh.
"I go into every season thinking that my competition will be the best it can be," Groh said. "I am also looking forward to all the new competition this year. I love challenges and hope to conquer all of them."
Groh said she looks forward to playing doubles with her new partner, Ashley Bennett.
"We play great together and (plan to give) no mercy this season."
Besides Bennett, other new players on the team are Bryan Silk, Brandon Wright, Matt Sell, Tim Skutnik, Aubrey Simons, Jackson Lucas and Neil Kovaleski.
"My expectations are the same today as they were when I started 31 years ago," Master said. "I want my players to improve their tennis skills, work hard, have a smile on their face and have fun. If we do these things, we will have a successful season."
Last season was a good one, with the Spartans finishing second both in the EPCC and the PCAA championship.
"We lost 4-3 to Harrisburg Community College (the league champions), so I don't know that we could have done much better, " Master said. "They were just one player stronger than we were."
